The CBKC – Confederaçao Brasileira de Cinofilia has just published its registration statistics for 2003.
Brazil, which has just organised the World Dog Show 2004 in Rio de Janeiro, is the most important country of the SICALAM, the federation which gathers the following South American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Republica Dominicana, Uruguay, Colombia, Guatemala and Honduras. With almost 100,000 puppies entered every year in its stud book – precisely 97,918 entries representing 139 different breeds in 2003 – the CBKC confirms the increasing love for the “small breeds”.
The Yorkshire Terrier is still the favourite breed, while in the same time the Maltese, Lhassa Apso and Shih Tzu have progressed a lot in the last three years (+110% for the Shih Tzu/2001). The biggest progress of the Top 30 for 2003 was that of the Pug’s, while the largest decrease was that of the English Cocker’s.
The charts below confirm that Brazil follows the trend observed in several countries (USA, Japan, etc.), where the Mini and Toy dogs are more and more fashionable. (See also our article Small Dogs Are In The Mood In Brazil.)
