The LOOF – the Official French Book of Feline Origins – has just published a statistical study of purebred cats in France. While the Persian remains the most popular cat breed in France, serious challengers are in its wake.
With almost a third of the total registrations of purebred cats at the LOOF, the Persian remains the unquestionable leader of the feline family. But its leadership begins to show weaknesses, with a regular decrease of its births for the 2002/2005 period. Here are in a few tables the main data of purebred cats in France, which, comparatively, are ten times inferior to the number of purebred dogs registered in France.
The variety of the feline breeds – over 60 breeds bred by French Catteries – doesn’t prevent fanciers to turn to the same 5 breeds with figures above 1,000 births per year, among which the one with largest increase since 2002, the Maine Coon. If the trend for the breed remains the same in the following years, it is quite likely that it will be among the top 3 of the most popular breeds.
