2003 was record year for French dog fancy
Text by franck Haymann, pictures Christopher Hermeline

The French Canine Central Society had never had so many registrations in its book of origin since its creation. With 175,667 dogs registered in 2003, France reinforces its second place within the 79 countries of the Féderation Cynologique Internationale, behind Japan.

Main figures for 2003

- Provisional registrations at the book of origin: 175,629 (162,587 in 2001),
- Total of registrations at the Provisional book (dogs whose genealogy is not complete on three generations): 38 (124 in 2001),
- Grand total: 175,667 (162,711 in 2001).

While the German Shepherd and the Labrador are still the two top breeds – they’ve been so for over 10 years – some breeds, such as the Golden Retriever, the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel seem decided to play an ever growing part in the coming years.
Let’s note that in 1994, there had been 14,477 registrations for the German Shepherd, 7,856 for the Labrador, 1,478 for the Golden Retriever, 212 for the American Staffordshire Terrier, and 2,327 for the Cavalier King Charles.
