The Felines In Auneau
Text by Bruno Soriano, pictures RR

At Auneau, somewhere between Chartres and Paris, FRANCE, in a magnificent park in the middle of which is set a castle from the 14th century, you will discover the first European centre for the breeding and reproduction of wild felines.

More than 20 species of live in Auneau's Feline Park. From the smallest feline in the world, the rubiginous cat - which weigh only 700 grams - to the biggest, the Siberian tiger - which can reach 300 kilos - they're all there.

Image 51597You will also be able to see the king of the animals, the lion. His rearing can be heard 8 kilometres round. Only the males have a mane, but it is the females, which go shopping by hunting the game for the whole clan. Just like in the African savannah, the lions in Auneau spend most of their time sleeping. The cheetah, thanks to its spotted coat, has a natural camouflage, but it is most impressive because of its performances: it's the fastest animal on earth. It can run at 100 km/h, but only on very short distances. It's a sprinter, definitely not a marathon man! If you like great felines, you will be under the charm of the snow panther's eyes, or the supreme beauty of the white tigers, which are so rare in captivity.

But these big animals - apart from the white tigers - are quite frequent in the animal parks. But what makes the particularity of Auneau, is presence of small wild felines, which are rarely shown in parks, as they are not "spectacular enough". You will be able to see animals from the Asian, Oriental and South American forests and jungles.

Image 51598 You will also have the opportunity to see in reconstituted natural habitats other species such as the fishing cat, the Margay, the ocelot, the Bengal cat, but also the cat. The rubiginous cat, also called reddish cat, or rust spotted cat, whose coat is sprinkled with little spots of a rusty colour. Take a quick look at the jaguarondi, which looks like an otter, with its short legs, its thin muzzle and its thick coat. Then you'll move to the Sand cat, whose round face and huge eyes, makes you think of character in Japanese Manga. It will take you a lot of patience, respect and silence, to observe those animals, as everything was conceived to allow them in conditions as close as possible to Nature. it must be pointed out that the park participates in a European program aiming at reintroducing the endangered species in their original habitat.
