The electronic identification finally arrives in France, while most of the other European countries have already been using it for years successfully. This new way of identification will very likely charm and persuade the French owners of cats and dogs for obvious reasons of safety, surety and aesthetics, even if their pets are already tattooed.
These are the Merial Laboratories, which have implemented INDEXEL in 1987, thus allowing a better identification of the animals. The reason why France was late on the chipping side, was related to the tattoo, which was so far the only way of identification used in the country. France’s neighbours, which have benefited from a system of identification later, have immediately opted for chipping.
Note that in France, identification is compulsory for all the animals, be they given or bought, and for all the cats and dogs born after January 6, 1999.
One of the main advantages of the chip compared to the tattoo, is the fact that it remains visible throughout the years, unlike the tattoo, which tends to fade away with time.
