Best of World Dog Show 2005 in Buenos Aires
Aniwa Team - Pictures by Karl DONVIL/123Dog.net

Discover the best dogs of the World Dog Show 2005 showed the 7th of July in Buenos Aires, and all the results by group and by breed.

After what happened last year in Brazil, I was wondering what would be the effect on the World Dog Show in Argentina. Many people from Europe and the States decided not to go to Argentina as they expected similar situations.

This extra challenge for the Organisation resulted in a show that was organised like an example to many other events. They did a splendid job and had 3187 entries, a record for South America! Unfortunately on the very last day of the World Dog Show, troubles in the Dogo Argentino ring was the reason why, even before the show ended, horrible rumours spread over the World.

The show was held in the Centro De Expositiones Costa Salguero, right next to the National Airport. The showground was excellent and the climatic situation inside was more then OK. There was plenty of room everywhere and the German Shepherds were judged outside next to the river. As the weather was excellent people had the opportunity to walk around the halls with their dogs and enjoy the day. The main ring was in a separate hall with all facilities like a restaurant and grooming space. Along the main ring on 3 sides were stands for the public, while on one long side there were seats for the VIP’s and judges. The ring was completely covered with blue carpet. Unfortunately for the Press the ring was very long and as the Judges were seated on one end, the judgement mainly happened far away from the Press Corner. On the other hand the communication with the organisers was excellent and lots of efficient security people were present in order to have everything under control.

The Dogo ring (read the article)

Although the rings were rathre small for some breeds, they were brilliant. All had chairs around and most of them were provided on one side with a décor that had a door in the middle and a nice red curtain around. This was the entrance to the ring. Only the dogs that were judged were allowed in and around the ring, all others stayed behind the curtain door. This created a relaxed situation in the ring and improved the general look. No boxes and seats around or people grooming their dogs or blocking the passage to visitors. I was really impressed by this simple, but nice and efficient solution. This is really something to think about. Two big halls were provided as grooming area. They were guarded by security people and only those who had a special coloured bracelet, were allowed in. This area was closed to the public. Another efficient step for security reasons, as this reduced for example the risk of theft.

Another central hall had a big central information stand in the middle, easy to find. The staff was very efficient and most of them spoke several languages, and were very correct and stress resistant. And although the server went down several times, the complete results were available on the Internet the next day!

The show was spread over 4 days of which the two first were CACIB shows. This allowed foreign dogs to become Argentinean champion and go up to a higher class on Saturday and Sunday for respectively the Americas and Caribbean Section Dog Show and World Dog Show. That is the main reason why this show was held in 4 days. All dogs were entered under different judges every day and this why so many judges were invited (no less then 68!) from all parts of the world. Many of them were from Europe in order to create confidence to the European exhibitors.

Next year, the World Dog Show will take place in Poland

Exhibitors came from over 50 different countries, even from New Zealand, India, Kuwait and Japan. Argentina had the biggest part with 1327 entries, followed by Brazil with 456 and Chile with 178. The USA counted 167 entries, Mexico 152.Spain was the number 1 from the European countries with 78 entries, next came Italy with 69 and Germany with 51. 7 Dogs were entered from the United Kingdom and 40 from Russia. One dog died in the plain from Spain to Buenos Aires, the Crufts winning Bull Mastiff. The luggage compartment was not conditioned and the dog was found frozen after landing. This was not the responsibility of the organisation of course, but of the airline company from Spain.

Because of the problems in the Dogo ring, the whole schedule was delayed by 4 hours and judges were asked to work as fast as possible and the main ring program could finally start at 9 PM and finish 0.30 AM, including a spectacular Tango Show.

Tango

Four shows on four days with the same dogs means that a lot of them appear every evening in the main ring again. But what a quality! The professional level of handling is very high and most of the dogs in the main ring were a delight for the eye. Not all breeds were according to the FCI standards but this was less the case compared to Brazil last year. The influence of the audience is also more prominent than in the Western World and many times the applause was deafening.

For the local spectators a lot of breeds were very unfamiliar like the Hannoverischer Schweisshund or the Sabueso Del Valle De Save (Hound from Croatia). The number of different breeds was very good and could be compared with a regular show in Europe. Notwithstanding the problems during the day, the main ring program was nice, not exaggerated and with quality entertainment. The speeches and the ceremonial part was kept to the limit and the audience stayed, looked and enjoyed until the very last minute. Nobody was seemed too much affected by the incident. The President of the show, the Vice-president and President of the Argentinean Kennel Club were obviously relieved and happy and they can proudly look back on a splendid show that will be remembered for long for many different reasons. The warmth of a people and their gentleness is what I felt most.
