Belgium hosted the Sighthounds « World Dog Show 2002». Hundreds of dogs, an international jury and judging occurring on two days, allowed us to see many international stars. On Sunday May 12, 2002, a female Deerhound was crowned Best Sighthound of this 2002 edition!
I must admit that, as a former member of the committee and as a saluki enthusiast, the club did a great job in organising its centenary. A congress was organised on Thursday and Friday by the separate sub-committees. On Thursday there was also an International Coursing with CACIL. On Saturday and Sunday, the show was held, rewarding the winner with a CAC title, and a great recognition in the world of the Sighthounds.
Although in 1880 a five-day show was held in Brussels, where 24 Sighthounds were exhibited, the club was only founded in 1902. Its first president was the famous Comte Henri de Bylandt. This man became famous amongst dog fanciers as the writer or the first dog encyclopaedia, a work that in its original form is worth a fortune by now, as it is illustrated with numerous etchings and gives the dog standards in 3 different languages. But in 1902 the name of the club was still “Club Belge du Collie and du Barzoi”, changing into “Club Belge du Lévrier and du Collie” in 1903, only to get its contemporary name after the first World War.
Belgium has been known for its Borzois with many imports from Russia, even from the Duke’s Kennel himself. Probably this is the reason why the logo of the club has 3 Borzois in its shield and no other Sighthound breed. In 1923 the UICL (Union International des Clubs de Lévriers) was founded in Ghent. Again Belgium was taking the initiative to unite all Sighthound clubs internationally. Few among us know that the FCI is a Belgium initiative too and has its head office in Belgium, for more than 80 years now!
It was decided to organise the show in open air on the vast sports fields in Erembodegem, near Aalst. The showground seemed convenient and the weather was ideal, not hot nor cold, but there was a constant danger of a possible shower. The rings were very vast and the dogs felt clearly comfortable, as did most of the exhibitors. Unfortunately I heard many complaints about the changes of the judges. But when I compare the list in the catalogue to the subscription form, there was almost no changes at all, so this critic is not founded in my opinion. But of course, for those who had a change, although minor, the disillusion can be real. For a centenary there was a little bit of lack of glamour. But anyway the interest was very good on the whole, as each day over 440 Sighthounds were exhibited. Everybody seemed to like the exhibition to take place in open air, until Sunday when everybody was surprised with a heavy shower in the morning. For this reason the ring of honour was transferred to the tent, although the sun broke through in the afternoon. The catalogue was all right except for the fact that it contained no statistics and the address index did not show the country the exhibitors came from. Not convenient if you want to come in contact with each other, which is one of the most important thing a catalogue is meant for. Therefore it is hard to tell how many nationalities were present, but I can tell you that the most important part were from Belgium, Holland, Germany and France and a few exceptions from Italy and even from Estonia. The judges were invited from as far as Russia and Australia. All in all, this was an initiative, which could be done each year in a different country, and why not on a racetrack, as this could help to fit the gap between show and working dogs. Especially among the Sighthounds, the difference is getting seriously big, and isn’t a congress like this one very useful for both parts, and isn’t the highest goal of breeding Sighthounds to breed dogs that have power and performance, elegance and beauty?
