Between the effervescence on the rings of the Afghan Hounds and the quiet rings dedicated to the six varieties of Dachshunds, the rings 17 and 18 welcomed the Whippets, the world's most popular Sight Hounds.
With no less than 390 dogs entered, the Whippets were the second most represented breed of the Houng Group, behind the Dachshunds ( a total of 636) and just before the Afghan Hounds (335). Very few foreign exhibitors had come to Crufts (Czech, French, Belgian, Danish), and only one ATC whippet was classed, the bitch Daydream Di Mahana, belonging to Belgian M. Delabelle, which finished second in the Open Class. Several classes were made up of over 25 entries (Yearling, Mid-limit, Open for the males, Mid-limit, Junior, for the females), and two classes even counted more than 30 entries, the Yearling and Undergraduate Bitch classes.
Mrs L. Aldrich-Blake had 188 dogs entered on her ring, split up into no less than 12 different classes, among which a class dedicated to Race/Coursing dogs and a “Good Citizen Dog Scheme” class, a typically English class dedicated to dogs which passed their Good Citizen tests… The judge found her Challenge Certificate in the Open Class, the champion CH Fullerton Heavenly Mover. British breed fanciers know this dog quite well, as he has already won 7 CCs and he took part in several Best In Show finals. He was very elegant in movement, and really typical of the breed. The reserve Challenge Certificate was awarded to Demerlay Field Of Dreams At Gwendariff, the winner of the Post Graduate Class.
On ring 18, it was Mrs E. Beaumont who was in charge of judging the 202 bitches entered. After having scrupulously examined each bitch in each class, and chosen each of her class winner, she asked back on her ring the latter for the Best Bitch. She awarded the Challenge Certificate to the winner of the Open Class, Bluestreak Bubbly Blonde, a two and half years old bitch. The Reserve CC went to Bluestreak Belle of the Ball, which belongs, as you could have guessed from her name, to the same exhibitors, Mesdames Brown and Straughan. Around 5 o’clock, only an hour away from the Group judgement on the main ring, and when almost all the other breed judgements were over, the two judges selected their Best Of Breed. They finally chose the Bitch Challenge Certificate luestreak Bubbly Blonde, to represent the breed on the main ring. And she did it with elegance and class; although she didn’t make it to the podium, she was still among the pre- selection of the group judge.
