2006 is the year of the centenary of the VDH – the German Kennel Club. The VDH has just had a new president, Mr Christofer Habig, who is a man well known for his courageous positions and commitment for the dogs of mastiff type.
2006 will be a year full of changing for the VDh, after the election at the end of February of Christofer Habig. He succeeded to Uwe Fischer, who had been president for 16 years, and who was very fond of sight hounds.
Many dog fanciers know him as an international judge, but his interest lies elsewhere. This bank director entered the world of dog fancy in 1974, and ever since, he climbed up all the grades of the German Kennel Club.
In 1981, he started to be involved in the preservation and promotion of the Mollossians, by launching the Molosser Magazine, which has since became an international reference. One of his main concerns is his fight for the Fila Brasileiro, a breed which he knows very well, and for which he fought along with Brazilian breeders in order to preserve the very essence of the breed and avoid the drifting that have occurred on several continents. An association, the CAFIB, was created, in order to encourage all the breeders to preserve the type and characteristics of the breed.
Mr Habig is approved to judge breeds in the 1st, 2nd and 9th Groups (American Akita, Bloddhound, Dogue de Bordeaux, Bullmastiff, Dalmatian, Tibetan Mastiff, Bulldog, Fila Brasileiro, Lhasa Apso, Mastiff, Spanish Mastiff, Mastino Napoletano Perro Sin Pelo del Peru, Poodle, Tibetan Spaniel, Tibetan Terrier, Tosa Inu, Xoloitzcuintle). He can also judge the finals of the FCI Groups and he also has several times judged the Best In Show in international dog shows. He is bilingual and one of the most sought after German judges abroad.
Mr Habig was elected at a time when it seems that purebred dogs are in the modd again in Germany, after quite a decrease in the number of births at the end of the 1990’s, which was caused partly because of the dangerous dog laws and the bans in several German Länders. Here is below the top 30 of the most popular breeds in Germany. In red, the year of the peak of the breed.
