One of our visitors from Greece, Alexandra Yurkiw, sent us this alarming testimony on the catastrophic sanitary conditions, which condemns the street dogs on Corfu Island.
Corfu is a transitory island between the Italian and Greek worlds, where tourists from all over the world spend days sunbathing, and British and Italian gamblers spend considerable amounts of money in casinos.
Behind the postcard lie other aspects: the misery of the of the canine population in a dog shelter in Kerkyra, near Corfu Airport, where the conditions are simply dreadful. The authorities of the town found nothing better to give to the numerous stray dogs, than an awful shelter where the lack of hygiene and veterinary care, and abject food, condemn the dogs to a slow and painful death. What’s more, the city made adoptions illegal, leaving therefore absolutely no chance to the dogs.
