Even if the facilty is deemed very comfortable, a relaxation area where the dogs have the opportunity to relax an hour a day is essential for their physical, mental and social balance. This is particularly true for very active breeds like the Boxer or the Doberman, and also for the working dog.
This playground must however respect certain standards in its conception and utilisation, so that all the hygienic efforts undertaken to protect the rest of the breeding facility are not useless.
There would be absolutely no point in going through an intensive disinfection of the facility or a regular deworming of the dogs, if they can be infected again by the same source.
There are still certain common relaxation areas with approximately 8 box stalls and 4 small inter-cellular yards (see diagram). Experience shows that this kind of layout favors barking while arousing jealousies. This is why the recreation area deserves to be isolated from the facilities or, if not possible, separated by a dense hedge.
The surface will be adapted to the dogs exercises according to their breed.
For example, the ground length necessary to the gallop will be 15 meters, i.e. 3 times larger than its width, giving thus a surface representing at least 35square meter for dogs of average size (25 kg)(67 pounds).
One must also have the opportunity to make a regular decontamination (once or twice a year), although this is unfortunately often incompatible with the "small patch of green" where we would like to see the dogs playing. Indeed, wet, muddy, grassy, sandy or, even worse, clayey, grounds are very difficult to decontaminate and even promote certain parasitic cycles (ascaris, hookworms, etc).
The process of decontamination of these kinds of areas with lime superphosphate with a 18% rate (60g/square meter) or with ferrous sulphate with a 2% rate after scarifications of the ground proves very demanding and then it can only limit these parasitic contaminations without hindering them completely.
Trees are preferred to shrubs (biotope of the ticks),for they help to preserve the natural aspect of the place.
Finally, an agility course provides a useful relaxation for the dogs.
For obvious hygienic reasons, only the dogs from the breeding facility (except those in the quarantine room and infirmary) will be authorized to play on the relaxation area.
You will be able to leave together consecutively several compatible dogs during the cleaning and drying of their small yard.
Dogs in boarding, training, or grooming will have access to a distinct ground; this will limit the risks of dispute with the customers after a possible infectious period.
