4 - The Infirmary

The infirmary is a room or premises designed to house the sick or convalescent animals, or those suspected of carrying a potentially infectious disease.

In the latter case, it is necessary to act quickly to "nap the epidemic in the bud", by isolating its origin and protecting the still safe animals (disinfection, vaccination, serotherapy, antibiotic therapy, etc.). Here are the legal provisions concerning the infirmary :

"It is compulsory to treat the sick animals at the infirmary or to keep them at the vet's until they are cured. If no room is designed for this purpose, the facility must be closed to the public until all the sick animals are completely cured."

4 - The Infirmary

The infirmary will be equipped according to your veterinarian's advice. It is preferable to do the examination at the facility's infirmary. Indeed, the dog could contract germs during the examination or hospitalization, and bring them to your facility. A footbath should consequently be placed at the entrance and exit of the premises.

A strict isolation of the infirmary enables gas disinfection (formaldehyde thermal nebulization for example) of the premises and of the grooming equipment every time a sick animal has stayed there.

If no infirmary is available, it is necessary to have at least an isolated premises, equipped with a footbath and a changing room, located leeward, and far apart from the quarantine room, in order to keep a suspect animal while waiting for the diagnosis.
