It includes:- arteries that carry blood from the ventricles of the heart to all parts of the body. The arteries branch into arterioles;- capillaries, very thin vessels connecting the smallest branches of the arterioles to the first branches of the veins. The capillaries enable the exchange of gases, nutrients (nutritional elements used by the cells), metabolites, and heat;- veins, which carry blood from the capillaries to the right auricle of the heart. The caudal vena cava carries blood away from the hindquarters, pelvis, and abdomen; the portal vein carries blood from the abdominal digestive organs and spleen to the liver.
