Swiss Cattle Dogs French Championship Show 2006 in pictures
Report by F. Haymann

For the third year in a row, the French Specialty Show of the Swiss Cattle Dogs took place in Magny-Cours. Almost 350 dogs were entered for this 13th edition!

The French breed club deals with the four recognised breeds of Swiss Cattle Dogs: the most popular, the Bernese Mountain Dog, the largest, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog – which some people consider as the likely ancestor of the Rottweiler, and the two smallest and rarest, the Appenzeller and the Entelbucher. All these dogs have in common their black, white and tan coat, which provides them with a particularly attractive look.

Indeed, last weekend, they represented more than 70% of the entries. Out of 337 entries, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog had 25 entries, the Appenzeller 22 and the Entelbucher 10. The latter breed is indeed very rare outside of its native country. But the participation to the national breed show sure helps a lot to the promotion of the breed.

The jury invited by the French breed club was the following: Nicole Segonds (a very famous Newfoundland breeder, with the affix Du Moustero, Joël Frébourg, a Rottweiler judge and breeder (Du Domaine de la Chiennerie), Françoise Galceran, Josiane Thévenon-Wulleman (a member of the French Kennel Club and judge in several groups) and Mme Finkemeyer, from Germany, who judged the most important class of the show, the Bernese Mountain Dog bitch Open class, which was made up of 70 entries. Let’s note that Françoise Galceran was in charge of all the Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs, the Appenzellers and the Entelbuchers, which represented about 60 entries.
