Though the FCI stemmed from the French SCC and the Belgian Société Royale Saint-Hubert, it is no longer officially linked to either organization. The FCI is an international organization based in Thuin, Belgium. It is responsible for:
- Establishing the criteria for recognition of stud books in member countries (there are currently more than 50 FCI member countries, including most European countries and many Asian, Latin American, and African countries);
- Standardizing international dog show rules (organization, judging, international working or beauty championship titles);
- Promoting the sharing of breed standards established by the country of origin. These standards are regularly published in the French Official Dog Fancier's Review;
- Monitoring member countries to ensure that each country holds a minimum of four international championships each year.
