Small Dogs Are In The Mood In Brazil, Yorkie Number One Breed!
Text By Franck Haymann, pictures RR

With more than 100,000 pure breed dogs registrations in 2001, Brazil is a major country in the world of South American dog fancy. After a very strong domination of the Rottweilers, the Yorkshire Terrier is now Brazilians’ favourite breed.

The Confederaçao Brasileira de Cinofilia (CBKC) is the ruling association for pure breed dogs, in Brazil, and it is a member of the FCI. The CBKC’s members are, on the one side Kennel Clubs (Campina Grande Kennel Clube, Kennel Clube do Estado da Paraiba), and on the other side breed associations (Sociedade Brasileira Caes pastores alemaes, Clube Boxer do Rio de Janeiro…). after a boom for the large breeds, the last five years have seen the small dogs back on the front of the stage, with the Yorkie, the Poodle and the Maltese. Pictures below: two winning dogs from the Brazilian circuit: on the left the Boxer Ch Yanketruz Hunter belonging to Carlos Villas Boas, and on the right, the Middle Schnauzer P&S Camilo Del Retorno, all breed Top Dog 1999, with 55 BIS, belonging to Jorge Nallen and Adrian Landarte.

A general decrease in the number of births

Image 79247 In 2001, the CBCK registered 91,700 puppies pedigrees for 116 different breeds. There’s been a decrease in the last 5 years in the number of puppies: 116,429 en 1997 (that year the Rottweiler represented almost 20% of the births total, with 25,000 puppies), then 96,144 in 1998, 92,273 in 1999, 97,149 in 2000 et finally, 91,700 en 2001.
The organisation of the Brazilian dog fancy differs from what is generally seen in Europe, as the regional Kennel clubs establish their own pedigrees. The most important regional kennel club is that of Sao Paulo, which declared 8,104 pedigrees in 2001. At a state level, Sao Paulo and Rio De Janeiro gather almost half of the declarations of pure bred dogs of the country: 46,500 in 2001.

Image 79248 Imports are still very few. Indeed, only 557 imported dogs were registered by the CBKC in 2001, i.e. 0.6% of the total. And while the USA remain the most influent country in this field, Europe is gaining ground, especially with the German and British breeds. The Rottweiler is still in the lead for imported dogs, with 46 imports in 2001, in front of the German Shepherd (29), the Border Collie (28), the Labrador (28), and the Golden Retriever (27). Let’s note that Brazil has become one of the main importing countries of Champions Rottweillers from Germany, notably with the importation of dogs such as WS/BS Onex Vom Schwaiger Wappen (here in picture), Eyk Vom Tengen, KS Arko Vom Der Werther-Stadt, KS Fürst Vom Wolfert Turm.

The Kings Of Company

Image 79249 By analysing the statistics of the number of births for 2001, one has to congratulate the brilliant performance of the Yorkshire Terrier, which is number one with 10,881 registrations ( more than 10% of the total births), in front of the Rottweiler and Labrador. The Poodle and German Shepherd are respectively in 4th and 5th positions. A little local curiosity is the Pit Bull, which is registered by the Brazilian Kennel Club under its full name, the American Pit Bull Terrier, and which had almost 3,500 puppies registered in 2001, all coming from local kennels. With the White American Shepherd, the Pit is integrated within a temporary group, the Group XI. Whereas the FCI recognises only 10 groups.

Image 79250The 10 top breeds in those figures represent almost 60,000 registrations, i.e. almost 60% of the total. The company breeds are really in the mood, with the Yorkshire Terrier, the Poodle, the Maltese, the Miniature Schnauzer, the Lhassa Apso, and the English Cocker. In the dog shows, where the competition is often pan American, it’s a tough fight in many breeds such as the Dobermann, the Shih Tzu, or the Siberian Husky. Currently, after the CBCK results of the first three months, in partnership with Pedigree, Brazil’s Top Dog would be a Boxer, Elharlen’s Iago Gaiga’s Kennel, belonging to Rubens Verde, in front of the Basset Hound Big Long Blue’s D’Arles, to Alberto Salim Saber Filho.

Image 79251 In 2001, it was an import, Peginese Taloola Mr Dream Maker for Eldwin (here in picture), which was awarded the title of Top Dog All breed 2001, according to its number of Best of Groups and Best In Shows. These dogs will surely participate in the Pan American championship, which will take place in Brazil at the end of August, as this show gathers all the best dogs from Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, Chile, Uruguay, and Salvador.

Discovering the Brazilian breeds

Image 79252 There are two native Brazilian breeds: the most impressive and widespread in the world is the Fila Brasileiro: this is an impressive Molossian, which comes in three colours: black (rather rare), brindle and fawn. The picture shows a head study of Multi-Champion Xula Da Boa Sorte, one of the recent Grand Champions from the Canil Da Boa Sorte, located in the Fazenda Säo José Das Palmeiras. In 2001, less than 1,900 puppies were registered in the stud book. The breed is in 16th position for all the breeds. The Fila can be used as a guard dog, a cattle dog, as well as a protector of people and good: this is a colossus, as males often exceed 50 kilos, for a size of 75cm at the withers. Click here to consult the Fila’s breed card.

Image 79253On the right, picture of a Brazilian Terrier, Orpheo da Terra da Pituva, a stud belonging to the “Do Taduni” Kennel, which at the age of 4 has already been awarded some of the most important titles of its countries. This breed is certainly the result of different imported terriers and local breeds. This breed is quitenew in the world of dog fancy. Its standard – the 341st translated by the FCI – was published in 1966. a few dogs have been exported since that year, but one must admit that the Brazilian Terrier is still very rare outside out of its native country. In 2001, more than 900 puppies were registered by the CBKC, and the breed belongs to the top 30. its size goes from 33 to 44 cm at the withers – according to the sex – and its weight must not exceed 10 kilos.
