Germany accused of mistreating dogs

Germany accused of mistreating dogs

Text Emmanuel Pacitto - Pictures RR

The International Court of Justice has been seized in a suit to defend the rights of animals, in a case concerning the persecution and destruction of dogs in Germany.

The global information and evidence that has been gathered over the last several months has been sufficient to constitute a general picture of some of the dogs and dog-owners having suffered from these measures, and from their consequences…
Should you be part of an association, should you be an owner, breeder, work for an animal shelter, and have encountered such problems but haven’t yet made claims, then you should write to mention your case as soon as possible. Many different complaints have been recorded: confiscated dogs, sometimes killed by the authorities, either in public or in shelters, tight restrictions, sterilization and character tests done by force, torture, lynching, etc… Should you know of any cases, you can still signal them by letter, including all available proof, with your name, address and phone number to Fondation Franz WEBER, Cour Internationale de Justice, as fast as possible. The hearing at the International Court of Justice will take place in Geneva, on May 7th 2001. It will be translated into 5 languages simultaneously, and will be transmitted to the international press. It will be covered by the press and by television. Among the different matters that will be analyzed, there will be the difficulties encountered by foreigners (thus, non-Germans). Indeed, it is hard to travel across the country with a dog, impossible to enter international shows and exhibitions, difficulties to breed dogs, impossible to import or export dogs, dogs get confiscated…
If you don’t live in Germany and have such problems, please transmit all the information concerning your case to the following address as soon as possible:

PID, Presse-Informations-Dienst
Ref: Geneva Case
Schäperredder 7
D-23881 Niendorf a.d.St.
Germany

Please note that it is preferable to write in English, in order to reduce processing time and costs, thus avoiding translation fees. Only precise information will be taken into account, and names and addresses should be complete so that you can be easily reachable should additional information be required.
