The Scooby-Doo Breed Card
Yann Stevens and Emmanuel Pacitto

History: See the previous section called “Scooby’s History”.

Education: Hopeless.

Advice: The Scooby-Doo Great Dane needs a daily amount of exercise, mainly running in fear through haunted houses. This dog has a life-expectancy of over 30 years, possibly a lot more, making it one of the longest-living dogs ever.

Functions: Guard dog. Errm…guard dog??? That doesn’t seem quite right, somehow!
Pet?? Well, kind of, I suppose…
Scooby Snack eater? YES! In fact, he will swallow down just about anything, whether edible or not, whatever the time of day or night…don’t worry, this is a normal behavior for this breed!
Most of all, will pull funny faces and make you laugh.
Will giggle stupidly and…make you laugh.
God only knows how he does it, but he will help you solve spooky mysteries in unlikely situations, without him even being aware of it, of course…
Apart from that, he is totally useless. If you are looking for the perfect dog, Scooby won’t do! Anyway, I’m afraid you shall find that Scooby isn’t for sale…

STANDARD (1969 AND BEYOND)
Head: Fairly long and narrow. EXTREMELY EXPRESSIVE. Always carried high, with pride, except when scared. Strongly pronounced stop. Very very well developed superciliary arches and moving eyebrows. Black round rubbery nose. Hairy chin. Doesn’t look very bright, but can get a giggle out of anyone.
Ears: Generally has one that is straight and the other half folded. Play a fair role in making him look funny.
Eyes: Big, white, round and beady. Convey his expressions (or lack of) very well, and play an even more important role in making him look funny, if not downright silly.
Body: Long and muscular enough for him to dance or jump into Shaggy’s arms in fright, but not enough to scare away the monsters or villains.
Limbs: Long, flexible, very supple and muscular, as they allow him to dance and stand erect on his hind legs for quite a long time.
Tail: Fairly long, extremely smooth. Same color as body (brown).
Hair & Coat: Very short, smooth and brown with a few glossy black patches on the back and sides. A few long black hairs on chin. The whole body should be outlined in solid black.
Size: Depends on size of TV screen.
Weight: Probably fairly light! How much does a cartoon character weigh? Do you know? I don’t!
