Whether pups are given or sold, they should be clearly identifiable. In France, for the moment, tattoos are still the legal reference. Soon, maybe, there will be an electronic means of identification: a microchip that will take place under the animal’s skin. In any case, this ID number will be part of special register at the Société Centrale Canine (central canine association), the central canine file. This is what enables a dog to be rapidly identified when found astray. For each number, there is a card, on which one can find the information necessary to contact the last owner and the registration number. This is the first document the seller should give you. It is your responsibility to complete it by filling in personal details, and to send it to the SCC for it to be included in their special file. You will then receive a personal card, with your name on it. Should you sell the dog, you must pass on this document to the new owner.
