Phthiriasis is an infestation of mallophage lice. Lice are host-specific, permanent parasites. They cause severe skin irritation resulting in pruritic dermatitis with squamatization. The nits stuck to the base of the hair shaft are highly visible.
- Symptoms: especially affects the head (ears) and neck. Long-haired breeds are most receptive (cocker spaniels, spaniels). Puppies are the most sensitive.
- Treatment: with a specific insecticide.
