Occurring very rarely in France, nutritional dermatoses are caused by deficiencies in essential fatty acids, proteins, certain minerals (zinc, copper) or vitamins A (deficiency or excess), B and E. Deficiencies in essential fatty acids are sometimes found in animals that eat spoiled canned food exclusively. The rancidity breaks down the fatty acids, vitamin D and E and the biotin. The same symptoms found in dogs with digestive problems, chronic pancreatitis or chronic hepatitis are observed.
- Symptoms: at the beginning, the coat is dull and dry, the skin thickens and scales appear. Then seborrhea sets in (greasy coat) resulting in pyoderma. These appear primarily in the interdigital spaces.
- Treatment: supplement the diet with vegetable or animal fats in measured quantities so as to avoid obesity. Visible improvement will occur in one to two months.
