Ectropion is an eversion of the eyelid, in which the eyelid rolls out. Therefore, the eye is constantly exposed to air. This occurs frequently in Saint-Bernards, English and American cocker spaniels and breeds with heavy flews that hang low. Entropion is defined as an inversion of the lid margin towards the cornea. Affected breeds include the chow-chow, Saint-Bernard, small poodles, German mastiff, sharpei, etc.
- Primary symptoms: with entropion, localized irritation and inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva cause redness in the conjunctiva and a clear discharge that can become mucopurulent. The irritation and pain cause severe squinting and itching that aggravate the clinical signs. In later stages, cornea erosion may be observed. Clinical indications of ectropion include conjunctivitis with a clear discharge that may become infected and turn mucopurulent. The complications are clearly less severe than those of entropion.
- Steps to take: only surgery may be beneficial. In the meantime, it is entirely possible to regularly clean the dog's eyes (several times a day) with an eyewash containing a small amount of antiseptic.
