The Schnoodle, A Curiosity Made In America
Text by Franck Haymann, picture RR

Smoky, Bocelli and Hickory belong to a growing family in the USA, the Schnoodles, result of a cross between two very popular breeds, the Schnauzer and the Poodle.

Two stars from the American canine world have been used out of their ordinary functions and crossed together to create a new breed. The goal of this crossing was to combine the qualities of the two breeds, which are famous for their companionship qualities.

Image 128315The result is the Schnoodle, which presents the temperament features of the Schnauzer (liveliness of the Terrier) and the appearance of the Poodle. This union gave its name to the Schnoodle.
For the moment, the Schnoodle is not yet recognised by the international organisations. Not even by the American Kennel Club, which is the number 1 organisation in the world with around 900 000 pedigrees delivered every year. It must pointed out however that the recognition of a breed by this organisation is very difficult, and tedious: the Berger de Beauce, the Cane Corso or the French Spaniel are not recognised yet by the AKC, and don’t have the right to take part in championship shows.

From the Labradoodle to the Schnoodle

We could say that the Americans have a paradoxical behaviour. One the one hand, they are among the last ones to recognise a breed from outside their own world, while on the other hand, they are the first to try and create new breeds. We already know the Labradoodle (a cross between, you guessed right, a Labrador and a Poodle), the Malibox (a cross between the Malinois Shepherd and a Boxer), without forgetting the Shiloh Shepherd (a selection based on huge, longhaired German Shepherds). But registration is long business for the candidates. Except if a famous godfather takes an interest in them. Natalie Portman, the young actress starring in Léon and Beautiful Girls, has a Schnoodle, which she called Noodles. This confirms the loving character of this crossing made in USA.
