You will often hear people say that a bitch needs, for her psychological equilibrium, to have puppies at least once in her lifetime. In fact, this kind of statement has nothing to do with scientific knowledge. It is merely stemmed from human behavior.
Should she be made to have puppies? It’s always an option, but it is never indispensable. Before you decide to do so, you should consider all the constraints that your act may trigger.
Puppies are always hard to resist, but the entailing consequences are many. Delivery is not always simple, and certain breeds (the bull-dogs, for instance) even often require a caesarian. And puppies need a lot of care and attention.
When they grow up, it’s a different matter altogether (i.e. it’s even tougher to handle). Puppies are fun when they begin to toddle around, except when they start attacking everything within jaws’ reach! Shoes, plants, electrical wires…nothing scares them, nothing AT ALL!Then you are faced with the problem of finding a buyer for the puppies when they are two or three months old. If they are pure breed (i.e. from pedigreed genitors), it is generally not too hard, on the condition that the breed in question is popular with the public. But if the puppies are bastards, things might not be quite so simple. Finally, you should be aware that in some countries the law can be very strict. Indeed, in France, occasional breeding is allowed (except for category 1 dogs, for whom sterilization is compulsory), but from two litters per year you will be considered a “breeder”, and should therefore have a certificate proving your ability to breed. In addition to this, you should declare the production of the breeding, i.e. the puppies.
