Because of the geographic distribution of truffles, dog truffle hunting competitions only currently take place in France. In other countries, the rarity of truffles causes a certain reticence in truffle hunters to perform this type of competition, preferring to search for truffles for fun rather than professional competition.
The first dog truffle hunting competition took place in Dordogne in 1970. Truffle lovers, truffle growers and dog handlers gathered for the occasion. Neighboring regions followed some years later and created regulations. However, it was only on September 29, 1982 that the Société Centrale Canine (Central Canine Society) would standardize its first official rule. In the beginning, dogs participating in these competitions were mostly (99%) non registered dogs. This tendency has clearly been reversed, since we now count only 30% of the dogs as non registered dogs. The competitions are open to dogs of all breeds, but only dogs that are registered and have a working folder will see their results standardized.
