Schutzhund competitions were created especially for the German Shepherd as an evaluation of the Working dog's behavior. They are now open to all breeds of Working dogs. RCI (International Competition Regulations) derive from this selection program. They were quickly adopted by many countries. These two sports are very similar in their rules, developing the dog's natural abilities such as smelling and tracking, combativeness in bitework and obedience and sociability in obedience exercises. In all of the exercises, the dog must show enthusiasm and any indication of fear or submission is strongly penalized.
