Ring competitions are very developed in France and Belgium (though their regulations are different). The French Ring is a new discipline in the United States and has a promising future. Ring competitions consist of a series of trials in which the dog expresses its natural abilities in the fields of jumping obstacles, obedience, and combativeness. These trials allow the fundamental qualities of athleticism, dynamism, capacity for obedience, stability of character, and courage to be selected from herding and guarding breeds. The trials are recognized as a way of bettering the canine species. To this end, their results appear on pedigrees and serve to inform breeders on the use of the best male dogs to improve the character quality of the breeding.
