Know how to recognize a cardiac arrest and to react accordingly.
Artificial respiration alone is not sufficient in the case of a cardiac arrest. The promptness of the intervention will determine the success of later treatments.
Unconscious dog in respiratory arrest:- give two breaths and look for the femoral pulse. In the absence of a femoral pulse, perform a cardiac massage.
Large dog with a robust thorax or an obese dog :- lie the animal on its right side, on the ground or a hard surface. The massage is performed from behind the elbow head (4th - 6th intercostal space). Place the heel of the hand behind the elbow. Place the other hand on top.
Small dog or dog with a flat thorax:- place one hand on each side of the thorax, just behind the elbows. Keep hands flat, press with the heel of each hand.
Frequency of compression: one breath for 5 cardiac compressions.
The time between the breathing and the compressions should be minimal in order to maximize the efficiency. It can be performed by two people.
Continue to massage for 1 minute and verify the femoral pulse:- if the pulse is present and strong, stop the cardiac massage and ensure the respiratory function;- if the pulse is absent, continue the cardiac massage and verify the respiratory function after 2 minutes.
Comments:
Cardiac massage carried out by two rescuers:- one is responsible for artificial respiration, and the other for the cardiac massage.
