PYRENEAN SHEEPDOG - SMOOTH FACED (Berger des Pyrénées à face rase) / FCI-Standard No 138 / 27.02.1996

FCI-Standard No 138 / 27.02.1996 / GB PYRENEAN SHEEPDOG - SMOOTH FACED (Berger des Pyrénées à face rase)

TRANSLATION
Mrs. Peggy Davis.

ORIGIN
France.

DATE OF PUBLICATION OF THE ORIGINAL VALID STANDARD
25.06.1986.

CLASSIFICATION FCI
Group 1 Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs (except Swiss Cattle Dogs)
Section 1 Sheepdogs. With working trial.

This dog, less nervous and more tractable than the long-haired sheepdog is less suspicious of strangers, yet shows much gaiety and liveliness.
On the whole he has the same characteristics as the long-haired Pyrenean sheepdog. He differs in that he has a slightly longer muzzle. His head is covered with short and fine hairs (therefore smooth-faced), the hair on the body is semi-long or less than semi-long, reaching its longest length of 6 to 7 cm on the neck and on the withers, and 4 to 5 cm on the middle line of the back.
The legs are smooth with light feathering on the forelegs and "culottes" on the hindlegs. The tail may be long with a hook at its tip or docked. Many dogs are born with a short tail. The foot is both tighter and more arched than the foot of the long-haired sheepdog.
All proportions kept, the body is a little shorter than that of the long-haired Pyrenean Sheepdog.
The permitted coat colours are black harlequin ,brindle, fawn of various shades with or without a mingling of black hairs and sometimes some white markings. The grey coats are not very widespread.
The size of the smooth-faced sheepdog varies from 40 cm to 54 cm for the males and from 40 cm to 52 cm for the females.

FAULTS
Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree.
The faults and disqualifications are the same as those indicated for the long-haired variety.

N.B.
Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
