Portuguese Sheepdog

History

Some experts believe today’s Portuguese Sheepdog is descended from a pair of Briards imported by the Conde de Castro Guimaraes in the early 20th century. But today’s breed has its own distinct characteristics. It is very similar to the Pyrenean Shepherd Dog, which leads us to believe a branch of this breed already existed and breeders tried to improve the breed by crossing it with the Briard.

Description

Rustic, serious, and very active, the Portuguese Sheepdog is extremely devoted to his owner and the animals that he guards. He is always hostile toward strangers.

Advice

This is not a city-dweller. This dog needs space and exercise. Weekly brushing is adequate.

In details...

Head:Strong and broad. Domed skull. Occipital protuberance is visible. Marked stop. Rectangular, slightly hollow forehead. Well set off, slightly turned up nose.
Ears:Set on high, drop (without folds). Cropped: carried erect, triangular, medium length, finely textured and smooth.
Eyes:Dark color, round, set horizontally, full of life. Black rims.
Body:Length greater than height. No dewlap. Broad, prominent chest. Muscular thighs. Deep chest is well let down.
Tail:Set on high. Pointed. Reaches the hocks curving at tip when relaxed, curling up slightly when the dog is in motion.
Hair:Long, straight or slightly wavy, forming a long beard and mustache.
Coat:Shades of yellow, brown, gray, fawn, wolf gray, and black, marked with tan, with or without a mixture of white hairs.
Size:Dog: 45 to 55 cm.Bitch: 42 to 52 cm.
Weight:12 to 18 kg.
