History
This bichon is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean Basin. Present in France and Spain since the late sixteenth century and recognized as a French breed, it was probably developed from the Maltese, toy spaniels, and small Barbets. Once highly prized by nobility, the Little Lion Dog is now rare.
Description
Hardy, very stout, full of energy, and merry, the Little Lion Dog is affectionate and gentle with children. He is a good watchdog. He needs firm, gentle training.
Advice
He adapts well to apartment life, as long as he is walked daily. He also needs daily brushing. For shows, he should be groomed every two months with a Continental (or Lion) clip like that of the Poodle. Sporting this clip, he truly lives up to the name Löwchen, meaning «little lion».
