Native country : France
History
The Picardy sheepdog is probably one of the oldest shepherd breeds. Paintings and etchings from the Middle Ages depict this hardy breed. Its ancestors were possibly of Celtic origin and introduced to France during the invasions of the 9th century. The Picardy sheepdog, which looks somewhat like a Griffon, accompanied shepherds that watched over the flocks in the 18th century. At the end of the 19th century, the breed was selectively bred. But this newly emerging breed almost disappeared during WW I. Officially recognized in 1923, breeders reestablished the breed in 1948. The FCI approved a standard for the Berger de Picardie in 1964.
