Discover Or Re-Discover The Thai!
Text by Eric MEUNIER, pictures RR

Many of you may have never heard about the Thai, and wonder what on earth this can be. However, this breed is one of the most famous among the general public. Indeed, this cat is none other than the Siamese with the aesthetic criteria of the post WW II period.

The look of the modern Siamese cats began to evolve from the 1970’s, when it turned towards a longer cat, with a altogether more triangular head. The Thai is most commonly nicknamed “Grandma’s Siamese”, or “round head Siamese”. These terms were used because the breed was not recognised by the international federations and no longer corresponded to the standard of the modern Siamese. Well, it had to have a name anyhow.

Image 73331Nowadays, this situation has ceased to be, and the international feline organisations recognise the breed again, under the name of Thai. Unfortunately, the Thais with pedigrees are still rare in France, but the breed is only awaiting to revive, and will indeed shortly, thanks to the efforts and collaboration of structures such as the LOOF – the French Stud Book – which is the only way to guarantee a production of quality by avoiding today’s main problems, such as inbreeding, crosses with other breeds, or reproduction of seal point only, when there are other existing colours of coat, which should not be forgotten.

Image 73332 This is why, in order to defend the breed, and promote it in the best possible conditions, we have created the Club Français du Chat Thai, called CHATAI.
If you are a fan of this breed, just like we are, do not hesitate to contact us.
We would like to thank the Siamese fans, who allowed us through this note to introduce their cousins, the Thai.
