Moving is a big event for cats, who are sometimes said to be more attached to places than people. Some cats prove this by returning to their old house, sometimes making very long journeys. There was one old cat, for instance, that in all likelihood made the roundtrip between Lyon and Barcelonette, in the South of France, disappointed to find its old house abandoned.
During the move, it is wise to lock the cat in one room with food, a litter box and a few toys.
If possible, wait until the very last to bring the cat and put him in a room that is relatively arranged.
A move between two different apartments generally does not pose a problem. The cat will quickly take possession of its new territory.
If the cat is moving from a house to an apartment, plan to arrange the apartment so that it can jump and climb in order to help it become accustomed to being deprived of freedom and access to the outside.
If the cat moves from an apartment to a house, it is wise not to let it outside for three to seven days and thereafter to monitor it when it goes outside, either by watching or going outside with it. From then on, let it go outside more and more frequently, but keep a box of cat food nearby to bring it back!
