As expected from a meat eater, cats prefer diets containing protein hydrolysates, meat extracts and certain free amino acids such as alanine, proline, lysine and histidine (MacDonald 1984). Animal lipids improve the palatibility of cat diets. Cats would only select sweet if they are diluted in milk. Cats have an aversion for medium chain triglycerides such as those found in coconut oil.
