Keratitis is caused by an inflammation of the various layers of the cornea. The causes may be allergic, immunity-related, microbial, viral or mycotic in origin. They may be accompanied by ulcerations. -
- Primary symptoms: inflammation of the cornea with neovascularization (appearance of blood vessels in the cornea); cornea becomes opaque; pain, rubbing and scratching; severe squinting; conjunctivitis.
Among German shepherds, there are three forms of keratitis: chronic keratitis, superficial (surface) keratitis and pigmentary keratitis. Lesions begin at the extreme outer corner of the eye with massive neovascularization and a whitening of the cornea. In later stages, melanic pigments are deposited on the cornea. A second type, limited surface keratitis, usually affects longhaired dachshunds. The eye is especially painful and is accompanied by severe squinting.
- Steps to take: only adequate treatment can relieve the symptoms.
