Anterior uveitis is caused by an inflammation of the iris and the ciliary bodies. The cause is still unknown, however, it is a known fact that major viral and infectious diseases in dogs are accompanied by anterior uveitis (canine distemper, infectious canine hepatitis, tuberculosis).
- Primary symptoms: pain (and therefore rubbing, scratching and severe squinting); conjunctive inflammation evidenced by the redness of the conjunctiva and the nictitating membranes; fluid discharge and miosis (constant contraction of the pupil). In later stages, modifications of the iris appear: it becomes edematous, congested, looks dull and hazy, changes color and can become heavily pigmented.
- Steps to take: consult a veterinarian without delay because the aftereffects of anterior uveitis can be lethal to the dog's vision.
