This disease affects the joints and is characterized by the progressive breakdown of the articular cartilage associated with the formation of osteophytes (small bones) and a remodeling of the bone beneath the cartilage and the synovial membrane. It is the systematic degeneration of a painful joint.
- Primary symptoms: pain that is exacerbated by humidity and cold weather. Moderate exercise may lessen the pain, but exercise that is too strenuous will aggravate it. These symptoms represent stage 1. Stage 2 is marked by acute episodes: cries, lameness. It evolves into total joint block with a decrease in pain (stage 3).
- Steps to take: as the disease begins to progress, continue to make the dog exercise in order to prevent ankylosis. Depending on which stage the degeneration is in, the veterinarian will begin a treatment of analgesics or anti-imflammatories, or a medical treatment (glycosaminoglycans), or may even suggest surgery.
