It propels food to the stomach through the cardia, the opening into the stomach. If the cardia does not function properly, food piles up in the lower end of the esophagus and is eventually regurgitated. This can also occur if a tumor in the chest or a vascular arch present at birth compresses the esophagus. Over time, this buildup of food stretches the esophagus, a condition called megaesophagus. Typically, kittens swallow maternal milk easily. The problem appears when they begin eating solid food. Mild cases can be treated with changes to the diet, but generally, the prognosis is grim.
