The dog in fact goes from exclusive attachment to its mother to attachment to the social group. When the puppy is brought into a home, he bonds to a person and vice versa. He generally becomes attached to the person who feeds him, pets him, etc. Around the age of four to five months, owners should encourage detachment. If this is not done, which is almost always the case, the puppy will fall into a state of panic and distress as soon as he is separated from the person to whom he is attached. He looks for the person and in the process causes damage, sometimes mass destruction coupled with emotional urinating and defecating, even howling so loud that it causes the neighbors to complain. The dog must learn to be detached from his owners and the only way to accomplish this is to not respond to his invitations to play and not pet him when he begs for it. He should be pushed away. It is up to the owners to take the initiative in the relationship. The dog should also be given a place to sleep that is not in the bedroom.
