The kidneys are voluminous glands located on the left and right side of the lumbar region. They rest against the dorsal wall of the abdominal cavity. They are smooth, globular, and weigh an average of 10 to 20 g each (together, they account for 1/20 of the body weight). They are yellowish in color and covered by a network of three or four interlobular veins converging into the hilus.
- The ureters: In each kidney, urine is collected by the renal pelvis. From there, it is carried by the ureter to the bladder. The ureters are narrow in diameter and have thin walls;
- The bladder, a single, medial, distensible, relatively small and rounded reservoir with a thick muscular wall covered by the peritoneum. When the bladder contracts, urine is flushed into the urethra during urination;
- The urethra, a long duct common to urine and sperm in males, short and independent in females.
