Luxembourg autumn 2007 a meeting of 25 countries.

Luxembourg autumn 2007 a meeting of 25 countries.

With a 10% increase of subscriptions, 3874 to be exact, the autumn edition of the Luxembourg show is almost as important as the spring edition.

It is funny why this edition attracts less subscriptions as the spring edition? I cannot, from a cynological point of view, find a reasonable explanation, but the fact that this edition only exists since about a decennial, while the spring edition has always been there. Another possible reason is that this show is always the first weekend of September, right after the holiday season, an expensive period of the year and lots of breeds have better coats in spring. Breeders are probably more busy too with selling puppies or having litters. All these small possible reasons can together result in lesser success this time of the year compared to Spring. But many shows would be glad to have only half of the entries here.

This one was the 75th edition of this famous show and is certainly another massive manifestation and has this year attracted exhibitors from no less then 25 different countries. France had 1087 dogs on this show, followed by Germany with 838, Belgium with 756, the Netherlands had 537 and Luxembourg was good for 136 entries. That means that Luxembourg and its neighbors represented 87% of the total entries. England had 20 dogs in competition, Russia 15 and the USA 1. All others were mainly from the former East block countries. But also Scandinavia and Southern Europe had a several dogs, Italy had no less then 110 dogs in competition and Switzerland had 86.

In order to judge all those dogs and an impressive figure of  256 different breeds,a big team of judges are needed. No less then 41 out 14 different countries were invited. Not only is Luxembourg is the place to be to meet Irish judges, it looks like being a tradition her, but they seem to attract huge numbers of dogs too!

Mr Colin Hastings (Irl) really had a record of numbers of dogs to judge on one day. On Saturday he had 146 dogs out of group 1. Mr.Dick Mc Coy, also Irishmen, had the second one day score and the best total score. On Saturday he judged 123 dogs of group 6, while on Sunday 83 American Staffordshires were waiting for him in the ring, the only breed he judged that day. Mr.Heinesche from Belgium judged only on Saturday . He had 25 King Charles Spaniels and 97 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and was the 3th most successful judge this show. Mrs.Class from France was also judging one day and had 110 dogs out of group 2. Mr.Van Brempt from Belgium judged Teckels this time and had 96 dogs. She shared them with Mrs Schwab who had another 80, which resulted in a very unusual high number of Teckels. Mrs.Hectors was also one of the judges who judged only one day and had 89 dogs of group 1. A special mention goes to Mr.Jouanchicot from France, he judged 43 Rottweilers on Sunday but on Saturday he had a very good score of 76 Rodegian Ridgebacks, the two only breeds he was invited for. Mr.Franken from Germany was the winning judge with regard to a single breed. He Judged on Sunday only and had 10 Landseers and a super score of 99 Newfoundlanders. Saturday was a busy day for Mrs.Melchior from Luxembourg and for Mrs.Radnetter from Austria. Mrs.Melchior had 94 dogs from group 1 of which 49 Australian Shepherds and 52 dogs on Sunday. Mrs Radnetter had 88 dogs of group 9 and 47 on Sunday when she judged some Terrier breeds. In fact most judges had very good scores and the panel was again very well chosen.

Mr. Alessandra from Italy was granted the honor of choosing the Best In Show after two busy days. On Saturday he did four breeds of group 9, 83 dogs in total of which 10 Russkiy Toys, 22 Tibetan Spaniels and 51 Chihuahuas. On Sunday he judged 19 Mastino Napoletanos and 61 Miniature Schnauzers.

His 3th Best In Show was the Champion Whippet “Daydream” a 3 year old bitch out the famous “Di Mahana” kennel of Mrs and Mr Delabelle form Belgium. “Daydream” was made best of breed by Mrs.Desquartiers-Diacquenod from France and made Best Of Group by Mr.Deridder from Belgium.

2nd Best In Show was the Pomeranian “Showcase I Put a Spell on You”, an import from the USA and owned by Mrs and Mr Lohuis-Smeehuijzen from the Netherlands. Showcase is a two year old male. He was judged on Saturday by Mrs.Wagner from Luxembourg who made him Best of Breed. Mr.Delgado-Cabezas from Spain made him Best of Group later that day.

Best In Show went to the Old English Sheepdog “Eldorado aus dem Elbe-Urstromtal”. This male was entered in Intermediate Class as not yet two years old and made Best of Breed by Mr.Walsh and made Best of Group by Mr.Hastings. It seems that both Irish judges were impressed by this example of this old British breed and obviously Mr.Allessandro, one of the most experienced all rounders present,  had no intention to question it.  Mrs. Conny Verelst-Loest from Belgium was just delirious of joy. She had bred many Champions and won numerous titles with her Bearded Collies and Bobtails, but winning a prestigious show like this is a like winning an Oscar and certainly with a dog still so young!

The next show is already planned for 29 and 30 march 2008. It is possible that there will be a "numerous clausus" if the success continues as the spring edition is coming apart at the seems with largely over 5000 entries. If you want to be there too, I advise you to subscribe as soon as possible. All info can be found on www.UCHL.lu .
