The ever-expanding world of online dating in the United States took another step Monday October 20, with the launch of kissykat.com, a special service aimed at helping people who love their pets find love.
The New Jersey-based KissyKat Corp. believes it can tap into a major niche market by specifically targetting the 39 million single pet owners in the United States.
"KissyKat's founding mission is to bring the enabling power of the Internet to the pet community -- to the mutual benefit of pet-owners and pets at the same time," KissyKat president Rachael Kreisler said in a statement.
Visitors to www.kissykat.com are asked the usual questions regarding age and gender, but must also specify the kind of pet they own, list the pets they like and name the pets they absolutely "could not live with." The section devoted to spare-time activities offers traditional choices such as dining and sports, but also includes "breeding" (of the pet variety) and "animal husbandry." The company's creative director, Darren Trautwein, says most of the 78 million cats, 65 million dogs, 17 million birds, nine million reptiles, five million horses and 192 million fish in America share a strong emotional bond with their owners.
"KissyKat shares in this bond and provides pet-lovers with a distinctive, exciting and unique environment where they can meet and develop relationships with like-minded people and their pets," Trautwein said. "If you have to ask yourself whether you're a pet person, you're probably not," he added. Online dating is booming in the United States. According to the Web tracking service comScore Media Matrix, more than 45 million Americans log on to Internet dating sites every month, and subscriber spending on those sites is running at around 100 million dollars a quarter, compared with 10 million dollars two years ago.
