“I have troubles with two Maine Coons females. Since we took Laura home, our other cat, Jane, is marking like a male, she urinates against the walls and the doors of the cupboards. What can I do against this? Could neutering her be the solution?”
“... It’s not a problem with the litters, I clean them twice very day. A vet told me to use Feliway, as Jane had suffered from stress. Now everything is cool again, Jane even licks and washes Laura. But I’m wondering if it’s normal that a female marks like a male. Will Laura do the same.”
Many people believe that urinary marking is a typical full male behaviour. It’s definitely not the case, and Jane’s example proves it. Actually, this is a completely normal behaviour in felines, just like scratching. And even if entire males and females in heat are more prone to this behaviour, it can happen with all the cats. Urinating, and therefore leaving their smell and pheromones, is a ritual action, which allows cats to organise their space.
