In the context of a study on urinary calculi within the species, some Canadian specialists analysed 5,484 cats.
This Canadian study allows us to know more about the urinary calculi of the cat, a phenomenon very common in the species. The authors of the study have interpreted no less than 5,484 analyses.
The results have allowed to count 618 urethral plugs (the urethra is the canal that links the bladder towards the outside) and 4,866 bladder calculi. Urethral plugs seem to be more frequent in “house cats”, long haired or short haired. Concerning calculi on the whole, it is important to know their origins, as nutritional measures are different according to the case.
We learn that oxalate calculi are more frequent in Himalayans, Persians and Siamese. In house cats, they are more often struvite calculi. And in the case of those calculi, females are more prone to them than males (1,4/1).
