Created in 1949, the Fédération Internationale Féline d'Europe initially included France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Austria, and Germany. Today, it is present in 40 countries and includes some thirty-member countries. Its primary missions are the establishment of consistent show regulations, the adoption of unique standards, the management of studbooks, and the training of judges. Other federations such as the World Cat Federation of Europe (WCFE) have also been developed. Founded in 1906, the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) is the largest association in the United States, and possibly in the world. The International Cat Association (TICA), another American association, was founded in 1979.
While there are over forty million cats in Europe, purebred cats represent only an estimated 8% of this population.
